10 years ago the following were all operating in Hampstead town:

The Wells Tavern (now gastro)
The Three Horseshoes (now gastro/Aussie cafe)
The Horse and Groom (gone)
The Coach and Horses (gone)
The White Bear (now gastro, evenings only)
The Holly Bush (nearly gastro)
The Flask (saloon nearly gastro, public very basic with telly)

The Duke of Hamilton is now the only traditional pub in Hampstead Village, so that people that used to come to Hampstead now go to Primrose Hill or Chalk Farm to socialise. There's a music/sports/pizza pub that's ok (the Rosslyn) and the King William for the showtune crowd, but we've really run short of 'locals'. This would pretty much make Hampstead a "new town" It leaves the whole village looking like a shopping mall, complete with Tesco Express, Cafe Nero, Gap, etc.

Even Belsize Park/South End Green has more possibilities, with a bit of a walk, though they lost the Belsize Tavern.

People I know here still go to pubs, they just don't bother with Hampstead.
