The highest point of London and once the Bishop of London’s hunting estate, Highgate ward encompasses many green spaces. Much of Hampstead Heath, an ancient expanse of land, lies in the ward. It is celebrated for its magnificent and legally protected views over London from Parliament Hill. The stately mansion Kenwood house is on the Heath and holds popular summer outdoor concerts overlooking the lake. In Highgate’s tranquil Waterlow park is another fine country mansion, Lauderdale House, now an arts and education centre. Highgate’s cemetery is the final resting place for many distinguished figures such as Charles Dickens, Michael Faraday and Karl Marx.
