PREVIEW THE CLIENTELE
CARGO
WHO here likes star-gazey pop tunes with Beatles-esque instrumentals?
Me. Me. Which is why I’m mightily tempted to go see Camden-based The Clientele when they launch their third album, God Save The Clientele, next week at Cargo.
They are the musical equivalent of Prozac – and I don’t mean that in bad way. I mean every down in the dumps day that you may have could be brightened with one listen to their cheerful tunes Bookshop Casanova and Nothing But Sunshine.
And I’m not the only convert. Thousands of MySpace pals, a couple of movie soundtracks (including a Keanu Reeves vehicle, swoon), and a rave NME review or two later, the 10-year-old four-piece are clearly on a path to chart domination.
Having worked with My Bloody Valentine/ Primal Scream producers on their last album, they have moved to a more soulful feel with Mark Nevers – who’s spun the beat for Candi Statton – on this one.
Their UK record label, Pointy, generally dig out the best new bands on the circuit (and have connections with trend-setting music promoters Club Fandango), which can only be a good sign.
Currently on a UK tour, The Clientele have already smashed America, Japan, and that great musical nation Spain, so look out for their name in lights at a bingo hall near you. Even if they don’t conquer the world, they’ll win hearts along the way.
They play Cargo on Wednesday.
