Labour celebrate election win after battle with the Greens

Labour election

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

By RICHARD OSLEY

CAMDEN'S Labour Party has emerged unscathed from the Highgate by-election after a tense duel with the Green Party. Candidate Sally Gimson was confirmed as the winner late last night (Thursday) at the Town Hall, winning by more than 200 votes.

She said: "I think there were a lot of anger at Conservative and Lib Dem cuts. It was good to be a local candidate and I'm honoured to have been elected to represent people living in Highgate."

The Greens with Alexis Rowell as their candidate, the former Lib Dem councillor, had targeted the ward as a possible gain. The party once held all three seats in the area and it is the only place in Camden where it has had electoral victories in the past.
