‘Gate’ achievement – Torriano Junior School's centenary

WORK has begun on a new “gatehouse” building at a Kentish Town primary school this week to kick off its centenary celebrations.

The two-storey building at Torriano Junior School, in Torriano Avenue, will be officially opened in October at a ceremony to mark the school’s 100th year.

Costing just under £450,000, the gatehouse will feature a new hall for music, art and drama, two extra classrooms and a waiting area for parents. Community groups will also be invited to use the hall for events such as seminars and parenting groups outside of school hours.

Headteacher Bavaani Nanthabalan said the grand opening of the building would coincide with the launch of a centenary exhibition and film.
She said:  “We are appealing to former pupils to get involved, either by coming to talk to the children about their memories of school life, or getting involved in our short film.”

Teachers are specifically trying to trace Pat Sullivan, a mother-of-three who led a successful campaign for a zebra crossing outside the school in 1962.

Ms Bavaani said: “We are also appealing for anyone who might have an old photograph, report card or exercise book to please let us display it in the exhibition.”
