CAMDEN SUNDAY LEAGUE
LORD Southampton netted the biggest win in the Camden Sunday League at the weekend in a 10-goal thriller against Cobden Athletic at Hackney Marshes.
It took Lord Southampton just three minutes to open the scoring in the Division One clash when centre-back Troy Ryan met Elvyn Blackwood’s cross to place a thunderous header past the keeper.
The league newcomers quickly doubled their lead when Tony Dowsett was brought down in the box, allowing John McNamara to score from the spot. Two individual goals from Jason Medford all but settled the tie as Lord Southampton opened up a 4-0 lead.
Defender Ryan made it five with his second of the game from close range, before a spirited Cobden rally saw them pull two goals back in quick succession.
At 5-2 there was still time for more net-busting action. Alexi Nicoloau scored for Lord Southampton before Cobden pulled another goal back in a frantic end-to-end finish.
The final word of the day belonged to Lord Southampton’s leading scorer John “Bobotov” Purcell who netted his 12th goal of the season to wrap up an entertaining 7-3 victory.
Meanwhile the Senior Cup final will see holders Phoenix take on rivals Lord Tredegar.
Anthony Clarke hit a hat-trick as Division One leaders Phoenix booked their place in February’s final with a 3-0 win over MDM.
Afterwards Phoenix manager Dave Harber said: “I want to thank all the players for getting us to the final again, and hopefully we can now retain it.”
Lord Tredegar will certainly prove worthy opposition after beating Athletico Annies 4-3 in their semi-final.
