Arsene Wenger: Why the African Cup of Nations must go on
ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger tonight said the African Cup of Nations in Angola should go on despite the gun ambush of the Togo team bus.
After the team's coach driver was killed and players suffered wounds, Togo are pulling out of the competition.
Wenger said the tournament should not be cancelled: "I don't believe you can stop any competition, it will reward the people who provoked the incident. It will mean any competition in the world will be stoppable at any time. It is a troubled country because there is political unrest, there are rebels fighting against the government that is in place, that can be dangerous. It looks to me strange that the bus traveled from the Congo to Angola knowing there are rebels from Angola on the border on the Congolese side. I don't know enough about the security and why they organised this competition in Angola."
Wenger said he would not be calling for his two players at the competition, the Cameroon's Alex Song and the Ivory Coast's Emmanuel Eboue, to come home.
He added that he had not made contact with his players since the shootings.
Everton manager David Moyes said the shootings were "a concern for football".
He added: "Arsene makes a really good point on terrorism, you shouldn't bow to it."
