CHAMPIONS Phoenix started the defence of their title in Division One of the Camden Sunday League with a thrilling 4-3 win over Mostyn.

Midfielder Paul “Gazza” Butler opened the scoring for Phoenix with the goal of the game when he fired home a thunderous 25-yard free-kick. Sharpshooter Anthony Clarke continued where he left off last season with two well-taken goals, while Justin Pryce also hit the target.

In Division Two league newcomers Athletico Annies made a free-scoring debut as they beat AFC Brasenose 7-1 to get their season off to a flying start.

Martin Whitelock and Kurt Freeney grabbed two goals each, while Joe Thompson, Dan Keohane and Alan Covington were also all on target.

The biggest result of the weekend came in Division Three with Enate United”s 12-2 victory over Kings Hell Cats. David Morgan led the scoring with four goals, while Terry Slate bagged a brace. Joe Joyce, Sam Jackson, Adam Illingworth and Jack Hughes all grabbed a goal each, while two own-goals completed the rout.

Meanwhile Lord Southampton (pictured) did the Camden Sunday League proud as they beat North Acton 4-0 in the London Cup. Alexi Nicolaou broke the deadlock from close range and his brother Stevie doubled the advantage from a corner. John Purcell added the third and man-of-the-match John McNamara wrapped up the win.
