Give artists’ work a welcome home

Published: 26 August, 2010

• IT’s good to hear that local artist Frank Auerbach’s Mornington Crescent painting might go for over a £1million (Mornington million, August 19) but doesn’t this remind us how much important art has been made here – and, sadly, how none of it gets to be seen where it was actually created?

The work of the Camden Town Group, for instance, is important enough for Tate Britain to dedicate a whole exhibition to them recently – and two of them, Walter Sickert and Spencer Gore, actually lived on Mornington Crescent.

And we continue to have major artists like Auerbach working here.

Isn’t it time we found a way to house and show these artists’ works where they belong – for local residents and people working here, for schoolchildren, and to give tourists another reason to come to Camden?  I know at least one major London art museum would consider lending work from their collection.

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who wants to make this happen.

Give artists’ work a welcome home

As a researcher who is working on a dictionary of the artists who lived and worked in Hampstead, I fully support Cllr Chris Naylor's suggestion that a suitable venue for exhibiting local artists should be established in Camden.

My research covers a period from approx. 1775 up to 2000 and I can asure your readers that the area has been - and still is - one of the most interesting in London. In the past, major artists like John Constable, George Romney, Edwin Long, John Collier, Philip de Laszlo, Henry Moore,
Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Duncan Grant, Charles Ginner and countless other artists lived here and today, Sir Anthony Caro, Frank Auerbach and many others call it home.

May I suggest that with the help of the National Lottery, the council finds a suitable building - preferably in Hampstead, where permanent and rotating exhibtions of local artists can be held?

Camden Town Group - somewhere to see art locally

I think Chris Naylor's suggestion is an excellent one . What about locating a small gallery near Mornington Crescent that could house some exhibitions ? Then combine this with the proposal from award-winning architect Chris Roche (CNJ 25th March 2010) to clean up the space at Mornington Crescent with an exciting new design to encourage visitors to arrive via Mornington Crescent station . Frank Dobson has been our MP since 1979 - he might be interested to see Camden High St get a bit of a face lift and a new attraction for locals and visitors . Anyway I would be interested to join a group to make something happen - P.C. Florence , local Camden resident
