Give artists’ work a welcome home
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2010-09-06 00:51.As a researcher who is working on a dictionary of the artists who lived and worked in Hampstead, I fully support Cllr Chris Naylor's suggestion that a suitable venue for exhibiting local artists should be established in Camden.
My research covers a period from approx. 1775 up to 2000 and I can asure your readers that the area has been - and still is - one of the most interesting in London. In the past, major artists like John Constable, George Romney, Edwin Long, John Collier, Philip de Laszlo, Henry Moore,
Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Duncan Grant, Charles Ginner and countless other artists lived here and today, Sir Anthony Caro, Frank Auerbach and many others call it home.
May I suggest that with the help of the National Lottery, the council finds a suitable building - preferably in Hampstead, where permanent and rotating exhibtions of local artists can be held?
