PLAYERS from Somers Town FC were celebrating this week after winning the Under-11s Winch World Cup Fives at  the Swiss Cottage Sports Pitch.

Flying the flag for Ghana, the triumphant team beat South Hampstead in the final  thanks to a single strike from Sandy Owuadey.

Ten teams had contested the right to be named Winch World Cup Fives champions in a thrilling day of action.

It took penalties to decide the finalists, with South Hampstead, representing Italy, holding their nerve to beat Winchtonians, playing as Mexico, in what looks set to be the most nail-biting penalty shoot-out of the summer.

A mammoth 21 spot kicks were taken before South Hampstead secured their place in the final.

It was a closer affair for Somers Town, who beat Torriano 3-1 from the spot before emerging victorious against South Hampstead in the final.

Their success completed a delightful double after Somers Town’s under-9s won their first competitive tournament together when they lifted the Winchester Project organised competition as Spain on Tuesday.

There was also a special mention for Cantelowes who were the only girls’ side competing in the tournament.

Managed by former Arsenal Ladies and England player Kirsty Pealing, the girls led Chile to the semi-finals where they were beaten by eventual champions Somers Town.
