BANTAMWEIGHT Martin “Too Much” Power will be looking to fulfil a boyhood dream on Friday when he takes on Stuart Hall for the British championship.
Having already won the title twice before and successfully defended it, Power knows that if he is victorious at the Rainton Meadows Arena in Tyne and Wear this time around he will get to keep the Lonsdale Belt.
It was an offer that was too good to turn down. “The fact that I will get to keep the belt if I win is the main reason that I’m taking this fight,” he said. “I wanted to drop down to super flyweight, but this is a chance that I simply couldn’t turn down.”
Power, 30, first became British champion in May 2005 when he beat Dale Robinson. He made two successful defences before losing against Ian Napa in November 2007, the same fighter that Hall beat last month to win the crown.
It will be a tough challenge for the father-of-two, who lost to Hall in September in the final minute of a scheduled eight-round contest after stepping up to super bantamweight to take the fight.
“It was a close fight and shouldn’t have been stopped,” said Power, who has been at a special training camp in Finland.
“I know I can do much better this time. I didn’t know anything about him before and because he was so big I though my only chance was to try and knock him out. This time I’ll be able to pace myself, and use my skills to get the better of him.”
