OUR sporting future looks  in safe hands with youngsters from across Camden and Islington enjoying free National Vocational Qualifications in Sport.

• A FRUITFUL partnership between La Swap sixth form, Positive Futures and the Camden Sports Development Team based at the Talacre Community Sports Centre in Kentish Town, is signing up more kids than ever before to study sport.

Scores of 16 to 19-year-olds are getting the chance to gain a range of qualifications, including coaching, leadership awards, emergency aid and child protection.

The programme has been running at Talacre for more than 10 years, with students gaining hands-on experience by organising basketball, athletics, cross-country and swimming competitions.

They also learn to run sports events for young children with special needs.

This year’s courses have seen three students winning full-time recreation assistant roles with GLL, five sessional sports development assistants employed by Talacre, and eight sessional sports coaches taken on by Camden Sports Development.

Among those benefiting this time is Sonia Da Silva who said: “I’ve studied at Talacre for three years and gained lots of qualifications and experience in the sports industry. I’m looking forward to university.”

New mum Jessica Faye-Hill was also delighted with the course.

“The programme supported me throughout my pregnancy and they adapted their course to meet me and my family’s needs. I’d like to say a big thank you to the team.”

NVQ co-ordinator Lee Davis added: “The students have done so well this year, the course is improving all the time along with results.”
