Islington teams celebrate victory at the London Youth Games

YOUNG sports stars from across Islington have joined forces to help lead their borough to glory in the London Youth Games.
The capital’s biggest sports multi-event is already well underway, and so is Islington’s medal count.
Fab-four Tyler David, Gwinyai Muchanyuka, Joanna Shallow and Gulten Akis stormed to victory in the 4x100m mixed SLD relay to capture gold in the disability athletics.
Akis also scooped silver medals in the girls’ 200m and the standing long jump, while Kevin Osorio captured bronze in the boys’ wheelchair ‘B’ height bean bag event.
Faiza Khan capped a magnificent afternoon for team Islington by winning a bronze medal in the girls’ wheelchair ‘B’ distance club event.
Overall Islington finished 17th in the disability athletics out of the 33 London boroughs.
The medal count continued to climb with the disability swimming squad winning four golds, a silver and a bronze medal.
Gabriella Brumini Ince won the junior girls’ 50m and 25m freestyle events, while Zuriel Hutson and Joe Sharratt struck gold in their respective boys’ senior and junior 25m breaststroke races.
There was also success for Raymond Henry, who took silver in the junior boys’ 50m backstroke, and Millie Elson, who collected bronze in the junior girls’ 25m freestyle.
The Islington boys and girls team both finished eighth overall.
Islington’s fencing team of Leah King, Cecilia Peker and Jamie Christofis beat rivals Camden on their way to winning gold.
Coached by David Baker, the talented trio showed tremendous skill and determination to beat Lambeth 45-38 in the final.
The boys and girls’ hockey teams also added valuable points, leaving Islington 23rd in the table with 394 points. There are lots more events still to come over the next two weeks.
