Published: 17 June, 2010

SABRE star Soji Aiyenuro is successfully making the transition into the senior ranks after scooping a silver medal at the Men’s Hertfordshire Open, writes Steve Barnett.

Soji, who is also a keen footballer and has played in goal for William Ellis School, was narrowly beaten in the final by Jon Salfield of Truro Fencing Club.

Team-mate Curtis Miller, who trains with Soji at Camden Fencing Club, also showed his competitive edge in the pools before losing in the quarter-finals.

In the junior ranks, Eden Amsalem displayed tremendous skill to win gold in the Under-13s age group.

Camden Fencing Club can certainly boast a bright future after Jean Baigneres won the Under-9s foil title at the Portsmouth Leon Paul Junior Series.

His younger brother Jacques also did well, winning bronze in the Under-11s category.

The success continued on from Camden holding their own junior sabre competition at Acland Burghley School in Tufnell Park last month.

Attracting more than 100 fencers from the Midlands and the South of England, the hosts collected their fair share of medals. Soji won the boys Under-17s title, beating team-mate Gianfranco Artesi in a thrilling final.

There was also golds for Olga Kaminska, who won the girls’ Under-11s title, and Rubin Amsalem, who won the boys’ Under-15s competition.
