Injuries threaten to derail Tottenham’s season as Huddlestone joins casualty list
SPURS are facing a midfield injury crisis ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final showdown away at Fulham.
Key players are looking at long term lay-offs as the business end of the season approaches, forcing Harry Redknapp to recall rookie Jake Livermore from his loan spell at struggling Peterborough, who arecurrently languishing at the foot of the Championship.
Speaking after Sunday’s home victory against Everton, a result that pushed Spurs back into fourth place, Redknapp said: “We are running out of central midfielders – we’ve only got three anyway. It’s not an ideal situation and it’s an area we’ve been light on all season really.
“We’re going to miss Tom Huddlestone – he’s a top player for us, he makes us play and he’s a great passer,” he added.
Midfield kingpin Huddlestone, who has been ever present in the side this term, damaged ankle ligaments against Everton when he was tackled by John Heitinga early in the second-half.
The 23-year-old left White Hart Lane in a protective boot and is now expected to be out of action for a minimum of six weeks.
Redknapp added: “We don’t know how bad his injury is at the moment, but it doesn’t look good.”
Huddlestone will now see a specialist before deciding on the best course of rehab.
His injury couldn’t have come at a worst time. Aaron Lennon has yet to play this year and is facing another six weeks out, while Jermaine Jenas has had a groin operation this week.
David Bentley also has a groin injury and failed to make the bench on Sunday.
