Illegal international adoptions?? NOT!!
Submitted by akom on Sat, 2010-02-20 17:00.John Gulliver: you're clearly completely ignorant of the international adoption agreements - United Nations Hague Convention compliant - which China has in place with some 17 other countries, including the USA and Britain. The people you saw in the hotel lobby in Beijing were not illegally buying Chinese babies. The China Centre of Adoption Affairs, http://www.china-ccaa.org - an agency of the Chinese government - after close scrutiny and years of waiting, assigns qualifying couples legally designated orphans. Many of these children are deemed "special needs", with medical conditions which cannot easily be treated in China, or which make them domestically undesirable, and therefore unadoptable, in China. Certainly, one can illegally buy babies in China (just as one doubtless can do in the West End), but those children cannot readily become legal citizens of another country. Moreover, you won't find them en masse being greeted by their new parents in a public hotel lobby. Before you cry "J'accuse!" - please get your facts straight. Human trafficking is a tragedy on a horrific scale. Resources for learning more - for doing your due diligence - are readily available.
