Back to his roots! Michael Palin digs deep for Lismore Circus Community Woods

MONTY Python star Michael Palin proved that his roots really are embedded in Gospel Oak on Sunday when he braved downpours to show his support for the Lismore Circus Community Woods. 

Mr Palin, who is also known for his travel documentaries, didn’t hesitate to pick up a shovel as he planted a new “Gospel” oak tree to help the volunteers group celebrate their 10th anniversary.

“We’ve lived here for over 40 years, this is my neighbourhood,” he said. “I used to take my children, and now my grandchildren around here. It’s important to keep the area green and pleasant.”

Mr Palin, who helped lift the spirits of the 50-strong crowd that had also braved the rain by handing out nibbles and hot chocolate, added: “It has been tough to keep this garden looking so good. But the town has a good mixed community, with great neighbourhood effort and enterprise.”

Preparing for the celebrations gave volunteers the chance to use some new much-needed tools that they bought after receiving a small grant. 

Volunteer co-ordinator Suza Johnston said: “With the rain it was amazing that so many people came out, we’re all so happy. When the Queen’s Crescent Community Centre were redeveloping their changing rooms they had to remove some of the surrounding trees so they donated the oak tree as a symbol of their ongoing support for the work that we do.”
