Antony Fenn
Shock death of man who ‘loved to care for others’
OUTGOING Antony Fenn, who has died aged 47, worked in Kentish Town Job Centre and for Royal Mail before devoting the last decade of his life to caring for his American wife, Trisha. Mr Fenn spent most of his life in Beckington estate near Queen’s Crescent before eventually moving to Hastings where his five-year-old daughter, Kayla, was born.
It was while out shopping for his wife last Sunday that Mr Fenn tripped and fell, cracking his head on the kerb. He died of his injuries two days later in hospital. “Everyone here is in shock,” said his mother Ann, who lives in Beckington.
Mr Fenn was the oldest of three brothers. As a boy, he excelled in sports, swimming daily in the Kentish Town Baths and playing rugby for his school teams at St Dominics and St Aloysius.
Mrs Fenn told of happy holidays to Butlins and Pontins and picking strawberries in Ireland at her family’s farm.
She said her son “loved to look after people” and also how he enjoyed going “on the wind-up”.
Mr Fenn’s first job was at the Kentish Town Job Centre, a memorable position as he directly replaced Dennis Nilsen, the 1980s serial killer who worked there while carrying out at least 15 murders.
While working at the job centre he married his first wife, Monica – but the relationship broke down after two years and Mr Fenn came home to live with his mother. Mr Fenn liked to watch football and play pool in the Carlton pub with his dad.
After leaving the job centre he took a post at the Croydon head office of Royal Mail, where he stayed for the rest of his life until leaving to care for Trisha 10 years ago. “They were very happy together,” said Ann. TOM FOOT
