West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 4 December 2009
Looking for a lead from Copenhagen
• LEADERS from 192 countries are gathering in Copenhagen for what could be the most important international meeting since the Second World War. The Greens are calling for the EU to commit to at least 40 per cent emissions reductions by 2020. The UK, in particular, has vast amounts of untapped, renewable, energy like wind, tidal and solar that we could be exploiting far more with the right investment and support for development.
Green industry could also provide large numbers of new jobs at all skill levels. Our emissions targets must be met on home territory, rather than through ‘off-setting’ projects in developing countries.
President Barack Obama’s announcement that he will commit the US to binding emissions reductions has given new hope for an international climate deal, even though his current plans are less than ambitious. We need strong leadership to ensure the global community takes the necessary action to prevent disaster.
