Expressive dance from Zimbabwe
ZAMBEZI EXPRESS Hackney Empire
THIS musical is about a young man from a Zimbabwean township who dreams of becoming a footballer – but the cast must surely be fitter than even the most athletic Premiership player.
They possess the stamina of hummingbirds, hurling themselves about to relentless drumming, doing somersaults, skipping on top of giant footballs...
It makes you wheeze just watching it.
The performers are members of Zimbabwean theatre company Siyaya and are rounding off their UK tour with eight nights in Hackney.
The rose-red Empire has been in the news lately after announcing it will close for nine months in the new year because of financial problems.
On its first night at the theatre, Zambezi Express played to a small audience.
Ticket sales have been slow, but the families in attendance were not disappointed.
If fast dancing, colourful costumes and general feelgood oomph are your bag, you’ll be smiling at the final curtain. Until October 28
