‘No excuses!’ New active lessons improve pupils’ participation levels
SCHOOL pupils in the borough are getting fitter, according to new figures.
Three years ago just 55 per cent of pupils were reaching the government target of taking part in two hours of sport a week.
Now the figure is up to 93 per cent, exceeding the national average of 90 per cent.
The heartening statistics were released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
David Kerrigan, head of sports, parks and leisure at Westminster Council, said: “This a fantastic achievement. We work hard with our schools to ensure sport is fun and relevant for pupils.”
St Marylebone School has been leading the way, offering at least two hours of extra-curricular sport every day in addition to weekly one-hour PE and dance lessons.
Head of PE at the school Emily Carter said: “Rather than just promoting sport we try to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. We’ve introduced cheerleading and Parkour to update what we can offer and make it more relevant to today’s young people.
“There’s really no excuse for any couch potatoes here.”
The council is now working towards pushing the figure to five hours by helping schools increase sporting opportunities. |
