Facebook ‘hate society’ teacher seeks help
A teacher who became the victim of a malicious internet hate campaign by pupils is now receiving counselling.
Almost 30 pupils from Grey Coat Hospital School, an all-girls school in Pimlico, returned to classes this week after being suspended for posting “deeply insulting comments” about the teacher on the social networking site Facebook.
Dozens of Grey Coat girls signed up to a Facebook group called “The Hate Society”, which contained defamatory comments attacking the teacher.
Although the page has been taken down, the remarks are still in the public domain on other websites.
One says of the teacher: “She treats students like dirt. She actually sniffs out trouble and just has a pure hatred of children.”
Sources have confirmed that the teacher has now accepted the offer of therapy to deal with the episode.
Staff wrote to the parents of those involved at the end of last term after some of the comments were printed and passed around the school.
Headteacher Rachel Allard said most parents had been supportive of her decision to take disciplinary action.
She said: “We can confirm that a number of pupils have been given fixed-term exclusions for between two and 15 days after the school became aware of their involvement in a hate campaign about a member of staff using an open Facebook group.
“The vast majority of parents who have been to see me about this incident are supportive of the school.”
A spokesman for Westminster City Council said: “We support the school’s decision to temporarily exclude these pupils.” |
