Paxton's Head

Head here for Xmas cheer

PAXTON'S Head in Knightsbridge may be an unusual place to celebrate Christmas but their £15.50 special offering Beef Satay, Tempura Tiger Prawns, Chilli Ribs, Lemongrass Marinated Chicken; Chicken Dumpling Miso broth; Turkey Breast, mango, Lychee & peppers, Tamarind Sambal Seabass must be one of the best values in London.
The Christmas platter for two at £7.95 includes Prawn Crackers, Chicken Brochette, Chilli Ribs, Vegetable Parcel cooked in Curry Sauce, Jumbo Chicken Wings, Calamari rings and Fish Cakes.
The Victorian building houses the pub with its large fireplace on the ground floor, the basement bar which caters for informal parties and the newly decorated Pan Asian Restaurant on the first floor.
The Paxton’s Head is popular with the locals and has a charming busy atmosphere. The restaurant sits 40 in three large square tables and the three bay windows give the room a sense of space.
The highly polished tables have the chopsticks, napkins and Soy sauce in the middle. A cosy set-up especially for a party of 12 – so you have the whole table for you and your friends. The pale green décor gives the perfect background for lovely flower arrangements.
The Sauvignon Blanc La Serre at £13.90 is excellent. Their wine selection of 21 wines gives a good choice from Chile, Argentina, Spain, South Africa, Australia and France. More unusual are the beers from £2.85 to £3.25 (Kirin, Sappora, Asahi) and the non-alcoholic fruit juices. Refreshing and delicious the apple and elderflower is highly recommended.
The quality of the food is excellent and again their relatively small menu caters for all tastes. We enjoyed the Spring Rolls with Chicken, Prawn, and Vegetables in Garlic Sauce which were wrapped in rice paper. A nice change to the thicker variety made with wheat flour (£3.95).
The Shangai Noodle and Pork Soup is a meal in itself with Miso soup roast pork slices, noodles and baby bok choy (£6.65).
As a main course, we chose the Steamed Fillet of Sea Bass and Prawns served with Shitake Mushrooms (£8.25), the Red Lamb Curry in a Spicy Coconut Curry sauce (£7.65) and Jasmine scented rice (£1.60).
For dessert we had the Banana Fritter – whole banana coated in sesame seed and honey served with coconut ice cream (£3.95) and Sticky Mango Rice Pudding served with fresh mango (£5.50).
A welcome place to know if you live or visit the area for shopping specially at this time of the year.
Not only is it good but affordable something not usually found in this neighbourhood of over- priced establishments.
The staff are charming, helpful and make you feel welcome and at home.
