'King of Camden' by Bernard Canavan |
The Quiet Men
They call them the “Quiet Men” – five artists whose paintings evoke the pain and the humour of the post-war migration of Irish people to London. Bernard Canavan, Daniel Carmody, John Duffin, Dermot Holland and Brian Whelan are all from that generation of migrants and each has his own take on the life of London’s Irish in the pubs, launderettes and building sites – in the margins of the great post-war boom in the capital. Now a slim volume London Irish Painting has combined some of the best work of the group which drew massive interest at an exhibition in Ealing earlier this year and is due to be shown in Philadelphia in the USA next year. The Ealing show’s curator, Brian Whelan, also has an exhibition at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with work arising from his experiences in Africa.
