FORGET wellies, macs, solar-powered phone chargers – this week’s
No 1 gig essential was the fluffy woolly jumper.
Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions, which began at the Union Chapel on Monday, are magical in so many ways. The setting is so entrancing the bands can’t fail to come up with something special.
But there’s only one element that puts a slightly less comfortable edge on the whole experience – the pain of sitting for three hours on hard wooden church pews, hence the jumper/makeshift cushion.
The week has so far excelled itself, with Everything, Everything, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Maccabees and Editors stunning the opening night crowd. Chipmunk needs some space so his night with Tinchy and Taio has been cancelled. Hockey pulled out of supporting Richard Hawley and I Blame Coco, but Corinne Bailey Rae was brought in as substitute. Looking forward to seeing Florence and the Machine transform the chapel into a forest on Sunday – keep an eye on our twitter alerts and see full review next week.
• TORI Amos is playing a free gig at the Jazz Café (December 2). Entry by wristband only – one per person – available from 10.30am at HMV Oxford Street on the morning of the gig. Good luck.
• HEAD down to the Pirate Castle, Oval Road, Camden Town on November 20 for a fantastic night of African music. Thabani, T-Bone Africa and Kushti are on the bill – it’s a fundraiser for a charity festival in Kenya next Easter organised by a bunch of ex-William Ellis schoolboys from Kentish Town. Doors 8pm, tickets are £5 before 10pm. See www.riftvalleyfestival.com
