Yuri Gorbachev is at Gallery K 101-103

Embracing the spirit of his mother Russia
HE is the nephew of the former president of the collapsed Soviet Union, but over the years artist Yuri Gorbachev has made a big splash in his own right.
A fascinating array of his work is being presented by Gallery K together with La Parole Divine, a new art consultancy, from Sunday.
Yuri’s paintings, like the “Red and Blue Horses in Winter,” shown here, are inspired by images from traditional Russian folk themes, village life and childhood dreams, all executed with great style in oils, lacquers and gold paints.
His work is exhibited throughout the world in many permanent collections, including the Louvre, the Kremlin and the White House.
Some of his important exhibitions include the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, The National Museum of Ukraine, the joint Gorbachev/Chagall Exhibition in Prague, and the UN in New York City.
In 1996 Yuri was commissioned by the UN to create an original painting in conjunction with its Endangered Species series of stamps.
Born in 1948 in Uglovka, Russia, Yuri began his career as a ceramic artist. He studied ceramics in St Petersburg and later trained in Soviet art academies. Because of his name, and fearing for the safety of his family, he decided to emigrate to the US after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The 31 paintings in the exhibition span 15 years of his work from 1994 to the present day. They are said to show in retrospect that although Yuri has left Russia, Russia has not left him – it is the source of his inspiration and imagination.
