Circkus Cirkor
High scores for Big Top team
CIRKUS CIRKOR Sadler's Wells
CAPTURING imaginations in the age of 3D animation and Hollywood budgets that could fund a military coup is no easy task, but it is one that the team behind Cirkus Cirkör pull off in stunning style.
Mixing the simple charm of the Big Top, bonkers physical theatre and strange Swedish humour, this highly talented group of performers transport the audience through the looking-glass into a mesmerising world.
The first feat of the night involved the nail-biting construction of a 20ft (and not particularly safe-looking) tower of chairs, which one of the characters performed a nervy handstand on top of. It’s truly impressive stuff and is followed by some quickfire acrobatics, although
the pace slows to introduce a storyline.
Things get a bit weird as this story, about an audience member who has literally become detached from her heart, plays out with the aid of dancing red blood cells and gyrating antibodies.
Returning to more traditional antics, a beautifully balletic trapeze sequence and heart-in-mouth pole act, which saw the girl in a crisis of the heart plummeting head-first from the ceiling to within centimetres of the floor, elicited gasps of wonder and fear.
The finale, involving the whole cast bouncing on a giant seesaw propelling the acrobats to higher heights and more complex tumbles was a fitting end.
There are plenty of other circus-style shows doing the rounds but Cirkus Cirkör is one of the most likable. Until October 31
