REVIEW: NOUVELLE VOGUE Roundhouse
THERE'S only so many times an audience can be asked “Ça va Londres?” before breaking into a mimicking “Oui”.
The arrival of French cover-band collective Nouvelle Vague last Friday meant the Roundhouse was positively Gallic, in a London way.
To an audience which just about stopped short of donning strings of onions and tucking baguettes under their arms, Nouvelle Vague gave it tout.
As talented as this ever-changing troupe are, the truth is they can only be as good as their next song, be it The Specials’ Friday Night, Saturday Morning or The Sex Pistols’ God Save The Queen.
The biggest cheers greeted Just Can’t Get Enough and Love Will Tear Us Apart. For a band who have earned their crust giving the hits of others the downbeat treatment, a bouncy Guns of Brixton was a welcome step-change.
Studio collaborations with Ian McCulloch, Martin Gore and Terry Hall are achievements in themselves.
But as fun as this undoubtedly was for those on stage, Nouvelle Vague will always sound best on a sofa with a large glass of Bordeaux. RUSSELL HANDY
