A live (and lively) treat
REVIEW: NICK ROSS ORCHESTRA: EVENING OF NOSTALGIA
Her Majesty's Theatre
NICK Ross and his Orchestra aim to recreate the sounds of the 1930s and 1940s.
You could say that old classics never lose their appeal, and this concert was a two-hour treat.
The rhythms of everyday language are the jazz musician’s inspiration, as in Glenn Miller’s Pennsylvania 65000, now much more than a mere telephone number. The band’s rendering of A String of Pearls and Tuxedo Junction were a reminder of the tragic end to Miller’s career – he was lost in an aeroplane on his way to organise a concert for the troops in Paris in 1944.
Matthew Ford outshone Sinatra with I’ve Got You Under My Skin. Alice Coulam delighted the audience with (among other numbers) Yes, My Darling Daughter! and the band showed their vocal talent by joining in the refrain.
A live performance wins over a recording every time because of the visual spectacle, the antics that the musicians traditionally get up to, literally! Overall this was an exciting and vigorous performance. with heaps of nostalgia thrown in.
