PREVIEW: RE-RITE - BE THE ORCHESTRA
Bargehouse

DIGITAL media explorers YeastCulture, based in Tufnell Park, are playing a crucial role in a groundbreaking project aimed at revolutionising the way the public access and experience orchestral music.
The ambitious project involves the use of 28 high-definition cameras to record the Philharmonia Orchestra playing Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring from every possible angle, including four cameras attached to players’ heads.
The unique recording, known as “Re-RITE Be the Orchestra”, is to be played during a two-week residency at the Bargehouse Gallery on the Southbank.
YeastCulture, led by Nick Hillel, a Tufnell Park resident educated at Acland Burghley, was enlisted to bring the project to fruition. “We are working with the Philharmonia on a two-week residency at the Bargehouse that remixes the Rite of Spring across a 25-screen video installation,” he said.
The piece enables members of the public to walk through a full orchestra, section by section, while an interactive element gives them the chance to try their hand at being the conductor by manipulating and affecting the video and sound feeds.”
Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia’s principal conductor, was responsible for coming up with the idea for the project. He said: “I’ve always been intereseted in how to combine technology with the kind of music we play and how to make this collaboration organic rather than something added on.
“Being inside an orchestra, experiencing the sensation of 101 players taking on this iconic music is one of the biggest adrenalin rushes.’

• The digital residency will take place from November 5-15 at the Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, Bargehouse Street, SE1. 020 7021 1600. Entry is free. www. philharmonia.co. uk

• For YeastCulture, the collaboration with the Philharmonia extends to work with artists including Jamie Cullum, Courtney Pine, the Beastie Boys and Michael Nyman.
Another project under way is work on visuals for “Confluence” being created by Nitin Sawhney and Akram Khan. It is to be performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre from November 26-28.The performance fuses Sawhney’s bewitching music with Khan’s blend of classical kathak and contemporary dance while YeastCulture visuals explore different themes around “memory and the present”.
The Sawhney-Khan creation will be the closing production for their two-week Svapnagata Festival of Indian music and dance at Sadler’s Wells, which starts on November 16.
