Dean’s 5 and Dime comeback
CRITICS weren’t sure what to make of Ed Graczyk’s lo-fi Texan drama about a female James Dean fan club when it first hit Broadway in 1982.
A Robert Altman film adaptation of Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, featuring a central performance from the pop singer Cher, eventually proved the
play’s worth – and showed the world that Cher could act after all.
That said, it remains a seldom-performed piece. John Plews, artistic director of the Upstairs at the Gatehouse Theatre, has dusted the cobwebs off Jimmy Dean with a spritely revival at the intimate Highgate venue.
Twenty years after the death of their idol, a group of women
meet in a 5 & Dime store in McCarthy, the location of Dean’s third and final film, Giant.
Audiences will have the chance to grill Mr Plews and his cast after the show on September 30 – the date on which Dean died in a car accident 54 years ago.
