Grooves
WE’VE been keeping a close eye on Saint. He’s from Camden, and he looks set to score a hit with N-Dubz. He’ll be at a showcase at Bar Rumba on Monday.
Maybe N-Dubz will turn up too? I’m hearing this is one night not to miss. Hear Saint’s full story in Grooves in a couple of weeks.
• It’s Jack Daniels’ birthday again which means all sorts of unique music collaborations will be crawling out of the woodwork. This year Jon McClure (Reverend and the Makers), Carl Barat (The Libertines/Dirty Pretty Things) and Brett Anderson (Suede) jam with Nashville legends The New Silver Cornet Band at Village Underground, Shoreditch, on October 8. Win tickets in next week’s Grooves.
•The gloriously strange Nic Dawson Kelly supported The Hold Steady at the 02 Academy Islington last week, but to see him at his best, see his tour next month – we’re still waiting to hear his London dates.
• Afro combs at the ready, if you think Camden’s missing some real funk, Family Affair at Proud’s redressing the balance – starting September 20. On the third Sunday of each month, LC Anderson – who’s shared the stage with War and Sly and the Family Stone – five-piece band Soulfunkcion, guest vocalists and DJ Chech play the best in funk and soul classics – all for free.
• One of my favourite Islington pubs The Old Queen’s Head is ramping up the competition by roping in some serious players on Friday nights. The Freestylers headline on October 2 while Friendly Fires play October 16 – and it’s free before 8pm.
