Matthew Barley in his motion capture suit |
‘Virtual’ gig suits high tech cellist
PREVIEW: MATTHEW BARLEY
King's Place
USE of high-tech special effects to create a novel musical experience for concert-goers will scale new heights at the four-day residency of virtuoso cellist Matthew Barley at Kings Place, York Way, next week.
The final evening concert on Saturday, September 26 will be performed in complete darkness with Barley playing as The Virtual Cellist in an exploration of the possibilities thrown up by combinations of sound and image.
The performance is being put together with the help of Nick Hillel and his YeastCulture business, the digital media explorers based in Tufnell Park.
“Matthew will be playing the cello in a motion capture suit,” says Hillel.
“Motion capture suits have been used in a lot of Hollywood films, of course, such as Sin City, Big Chill and Lord of the Rings.
“But we believe this is the first time they have been used in a live classical music performance.
“While Matthew is playing on stage, we will mix improvised visuals across several screens in the auditorium as well as weave in images of the movements of the motion capture suit, particularly the movements of the bow.”
For Barley, the fresh use of multi-media techniques will underpin his reputation as one of the world’s most adventurous cellists.
His four-day residency at Kings Place from Wednesday, September 23 to Saturday, September 26 will see Barley play some of the great classics and perform with jazz, Indian and Sufi musicians.
Barley says: “Kit Armstrong and Julian Joseph are joining me in classical and jazz recitals respectively. There are ensemble concerts, premieres of new work and lots of improvisations.”
