HOW did Jay-Z’s Roundhouse show sell out in 20 seconds?
It’d take nearly that long to dial the number. And what about less dextrous people, or those without the internet? Jay-Z’s elderly and more arthritic fans didn’t stand a chance! Long shot, but I suppose putting a glass to the door just won’t cut it?
• WE’VE heard big things about Dan Sartain – a maestro in rockabilly, blues and garage punk – from Birmingham, Alabama.
He’s opened for The White Stripes, now see him headline The Lexington on September 15.
• Also at the Lexington are last week’s record of the week choice Kill it Kid. They’re here next month (Oct 13) and if the album’s anything to go by, it’ll be monumental.
• Remember Zero 7? They were part of that whole trippy chill-out scene sometime ago. They play two nights at The Roundhouse on October 8 and 9.
• Soul lovers expect some surprises at An Evening with Nate James at the Jazz Cafe (Sept 25). The Mobo nominee and Urban Music Awards best soul artist will be courting some very special guests at this rare celebratory
one-off show.
• Skunk Anansie are still knocking around. Is Skin still angry? See for yourself at the Electric Ballroom on October 7.
• Billy Bragg’s prison music crusade continues. His project Jail Guitar Doors, which helps rehabilitate inmates by donating instruments, is coming to Proud on Oct 1. As well as Bragg, the line-up includes Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Chris Shifflet from the Foo Fighters, Wayne Kramer (MC5), Rotten Hill Gang featuring Mick Jones, Night of Treason and, most importantly, the Jail Guitar Doors Graduates.
