•Les Demoiselles De Rochfort. Directed by Jacques Remy. Certificate: U
THIS British Film Institute reprint of a classic 1960s French musical looks wonderful, and deserves to become a period piece simply for the style of director Jacques Demy and the France of 40 years ago he was good enough to capture on film. Demy’s musical features Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac as the all-singing, all-dancing siblings determined to see what the world holds beyond the confines of their small town.
Their chance to make contact with the outside world appears in the form of two smooth-talking workers who ride into town with a carnival.
With a supporting role for Gene Kelly, this 1967 production has a fair amount of charm and ease about it.
