The Review - AT THE MOVIES with DAN CARRIER Published: 9 July 2009
Pick of the Indies
FOLLOWING the pleasure I got from watching the super Cuban movie Strawberry and Chocolate (see last week’s paper), I am looking forward to checking tonight’s (Thursday) film in the Cine Cuban film festival at the Barbican. Called Omerta, we are taken back to Cuba in the 1960s were we meet an ageing gangster who cut his teeth, and earned his fortune and reputation during the oppressive Batista years.
He tries to find a way to wriggle out of the game he has made his living in and finds a new role in a society that offers freedom and equality – a situation he finds alien and ultimately is not happy with.
Director Pavel Giroud had success with his first feature, Le Edad de la Peseta, and in this film tackles the massive changes the revolution hoisted on every aspect of Cuba society – including shady characters in
the Cuban under-world.
The film starts at 6.30pm. Visit www.barbican.org.uk/film.
Meanwhile, the Tricycle in Kilburn is screening the excellent Mexican offering Rudo and Cursi.
It tells the hilarious story of two footballing half-brothers who find themselves picked to play for two rival teams in Mexico City.
While full of humour, director Carlos Cuaron also paints a complete picture of life in Mexico today.
