HOW free are the Free Painters and Sculptors? So free that they broke away from the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) because they found it too restrictive – a little like finding Gandhi too aggressive, one might think. So free that they have trodden their own path since 1952, exhibiting their devotion to freedom of expression at the Mall Galleries, the Barbican and many others.
Bolstered by significant artists such as John Stansfield and Frank Avery Wilson, the Free Painters and Sculptors have begun to return to the institutional environment they split away from; Tate Modern holds examples of their work. This month, members of the 100-strong group including Malcolm Franklin, Len Wyatt and John Mackenzie bring their work to the atmospheric crypt of St Pancras Church.
It may not seem so revolutionary any more, but it is still well worth inspection. SIMON WROE
