STICK this in your diary: the Kilburn Film Festival is upon us and has become an interesting date on any movie-lover’s calendar. The festival, which runs from July 3-12, celebrates Irish culture and Kilburn’s international communities, and the 2009 event includes films made by legendary Irish director Bob Quinn.
Quinn has spent 40 years making Irish language films about Irish culture, focussing particularly on the west, while organisers say older Kilburn residents may recognise themselves in his documentary film about the famous Galtymore Dance Hall in Cricklewood.
As well as two UK premieres – the Tricycle is hosting Kisses (2008) and A Film With Me In It (2008) – Quinn himself is planning an appearance to discuss his work.
And it is not just all about the Irish community. At other venues in Kilburn, Latin-American and Ethiopian films also feature. In two weeks’ time a Sunday show highlights short films made by Camden-based young film-makers.
