Stephen Gillespie
Gloria on doctor’s orders
PREVIEW - ROYAL FREE MUSIC SOCIETY
ST MARK’S CHURCH
A NEW choral work by a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital is to be given its world premiere on Saturday at a concert given by the Royal Free Music Society (RFMS) at St Mark’s Church, Regent’s Park. Gloria in Excelsis has been composed by Stephen Gillespie, professor of microbiology at University College London and consultant biologist at the Royal Free Hospital.
Mr Gillespie qualified in medicine from Queen’s University of Belfast in 1980 and his early musical education was also in Belfast.
Taking time off from his medical career, he completed a music diploma at Birkbeck College, studying under conductor Matilda Hofman and composers David Sutton-Anderson and Paul Sarcich.
In his new work, the words of the angels are announced with trumpets in the opening movement. A melodic waltz-like theme proclaims peace to people on Earth followed by their responses, followed by the return of the angels and trumpets in the final movement.
The concert also includes works Arvo Pärt, Karl Jenkins and Elgar, performed by RFMS and Hampstead Sinfonietta.
