The Review - MUSIC - grooves with RóISíN GADELRAB Published: 11 June 2009
THE gossip fiends have told me Pete Doherty jumped in a cab after his Camden Rocks set and headed to the Monarch to join former Libertines bandmate Carl Barat on Saturday.
But he hadn’t banked on the popularity of old Carl, who had filled the place so well that the police had to turn up to make sure no one else got in. So that was it – poor old Pete left out of the party. Check out our Camden Rocks photo gallery online.
• The Garage in Highbury will be resurrected on June 26. There are tickets left for Peter, Bjorn and John on the first official opening night on June 27.
• Head down to Monkey Chews on June 22 for a day of acoustic bands, headlined by girl duo WWW. There’s also live music from Why Whiskey Why, Electrilickers and Evans and the Death, with BJ Ben White digging into his record crate playing krautrock to acoustic, psychedelia, disco and weird pop. Free entry from 5pm to 12.30am.
• Venue I’m watching most closely now? The Bullet Bar in Kentish Town, which has transformed into The Flowerpot. Their aim is live bands every night, with free entry. So far they’ve had Laura Marling, Hockey and Slow Club.
• Records of the week: Kissy Sell Out – This Kiss: unexpected, hypo-collaboration from the young DJ producer – one for the Proud crowd.
Jamie T – Sticks’n’ Stones: Mercury’s hero Jamie returns with a marginally more subdued tale – he plays the Electric Ballroom on June 24.
The Panics – Cruel Guards: Orchestral, layered, psychedelic in parts, laid-back stories of misery with a Manc influence from the Aussie five-piece.
