PREVIEW - THE CHRISTIANS Jazz Café
?EMERGING from the socioeconomic maelstrom that was Liverpool in the 1980s, The Christians were slotted into the weakly alliterative “socially aware soul” box.
Stellar frontman Garry Christian produced vocals with a darkly sweet depth from below no hair and a big pair of bluesy shades.
Establishing themselves with Forgotten Town, Born Again and When the Fingers Point, and later on the ethereal Words, they left behind a worshipping public after reaching arena gig status.
Their chart hits were interspersed with other nuggets that yielded less recognition including a cover of Gil Scott-Heron’s The Bottle.
The apposite relaxed intimacy of the Jazz Café this Saturday will be a rare opportunity to get up close to genuine talent. ALLAN LEDWARD
