Hot lips still fiery
REVIEW -
BLACK LIPS/MIKA MIKO/GRINGO STAR Electric Ballroom
THE spirit of garage rock is well and truly still alive. Resurrected by four pyromaniac Americans (with a penchant for chickens and vomiting), it’s pretty flaming hot in fact.
Tuesday night in Camden Town, and it could easily have been Leeds circa 2003/4. The Black Lips gig took me back to a golden age of indie (when I was willing to pay £85 for a Strokes ticket and I fancied Jack White), as boys and girls alike collided in black hair, black jeans, black shoes.
However, the band’s chaotic stage antics were rather tame and the audience stayed clean and dry. The Lips played with relentless energy and vigour and, of course, lashings of good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll.
The icing on the cake had to be the after-party at Proud, when I got to meet none other than Liam Gallagher. Did I say meet? Well, obviously, I mean accosted. APRIL WELSH
