Northerns Celts are set to bring Irish folk music to Unwrapping the Present
Northern Celts catch the beat of weekend festival
A HEADY poteen of traditional and contemporary Irish folk music, The Northern Celts have been raising a rumpus in the pubs of north London for more than 14 years.
This week the Celts will set the pace for the two-day festival at the 176 Gallery in Prince of Wales Road, Unwrapping the Present.
Their songs are odes to the wild beauty of the natural world and classic tales of love and loss, sometimes transposed to Camden Town in the 21st century, and played with a guitar, fiddle, flute and banjo, to the beat of the bodhran drum.
Other festival highlights include Slow Food cookery classes with chef Sarah Moore, who will use locally foraged ingredients; screen printing, bag-making and sewing workshops; short film screenings by the Camden New Town History Project; book-binding; discussion groups on the subjects of local oral history; and painting a cycle-rickshaw.
There will also be a Give’n’Take swap shop, where unwanted possessions can be bartered and exchanged. The activities are all part of the gallery’s ongoing programme, Club Ponderosa.
• Unwrapping the Present is at the 176 Gallery, 176 Prince of Wales Road, NW5, on Saturday (12-8pm) and Sunday (12-6pm). SIMON WROE
