Juliette Lewis
No Licks, new kicks
PREVIEW - JULIETTE LEWIS Koko
FROM vampire slayer to vulnerable yet psychotic side of a murderous duo to fearsome frontwoman, Tarantino favourite Juliette Lewis has undergone some very public transformations.
And she’s in the process of undergoing yet another, as the cult actress turned rock star brings her latest musical incarnation to Camden tomorrow (Friday).
Juliette has left kick-ass band The Licks behind and will descend on London with an entourage.
And now sounds like just the right time to check her out.
After splitting with The Licks earlier this year, Juliette soon gathered a following at the South by Southwest Festival in Texas.
She recently finished recording first album – Terra Incognita, out later this year – and will make her first appearance in Camden at Koko. Her blog tells how she left punk-rock Juliette behind to create a new project, with layers and emotions, adding: “I wanted to make a record that has full flavour and spectrum. Not the same song 11 times. I felt I needed to
break conventional songwriting habits, allow those roaming voices to comes out.
“Terra Incognita means unknown territory and I wanted – needed – to go there. Not everybody wants to. But I’ve got no one to answer to, so why not feed the muse?
“It’s all about this love of expression and an audience who’s willing to take the journey into my mythical sonic forest of dreams, where romance and tragedy are next to heaven.”
OK, it all sounds a bit airy fairy, but if you’ve seen Cape Fear, Kalifornia, Natural Born Killers or From Dusk Till Dawn, you’ll know what this woman is capable of.
This could be the beginning of something special, so catch her now, while this latest transformation is still young.
