Bash of bangers and
mash tastes superb

TUCKING into lunch at Hampstead’s new Naked Sausage, I’m reminded of the late great Peter Sellers who sang nostalgically: “Give us a bash of the bangers and mash me mother used to make.”
Well, the sausage and mash they serve up at this new eatery in Pond Street, opposite the Royal Free Hospital, is better than anything my mother ever made. Sorry mum.
The man behind the new restaurant, former French-trained chef Wayne Peters, has come a long way since he first opened an award-winning sausage and hamburger stall in Islington’s Chapel Market.
He and his business partner, Hampstead-born events organiser Geraldine Canty, have established a restaurant that combines traditional English and American food. There is also a garden and a free nightclub in the basement.
On Friday and Saturday night you can enjoy a good meal and then go downstairs to bop away to DJ Geraldine’s 200 top pop songs, spanning several generations. As it is opposite the hospital, you’ll find plenty of doctors and nurses popping over – and a few patients, amazingly still in their pyjamas and dressing gowns.
Mr Peters said: “The key to success is in using the very best sourced meat and potatoes and natural ingredients. Originally we wanted to buy sausages and just cook them, but when we couldn’t find a sausage that we thought was good enough we decided to create our own.”
The venue has seating for 30 inside, 60 in the garden, and capacity for 100 in the nightclub.
Outside the venue Mr Peters has his restaurant mascot parked – a fully working American police car.
When it comes to food he has his own philosophy: “It is simply to provide the kind of food that I love to eat when I eat out and at a reasonable price.”
I sampled Cumberland sausage and mash served with onion gravy and caramelised onions (£7.45). My colleague enjoyed a juicy 100 per cent ground beefburger with delicious fries (£7.95). We shared a chocolate brownie (£4.45) with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.
