• Hannah Montana The Movie (U)
MILEY Cyrus reprises the role that has made her a children’s favourite in this feature-length outing.
Hannah Montana is the pop star teen who is really Miley Stewart, a gentle girl who doesn’t always enjoy the adulation her alter ego commands. In the movie, which is essentially an elongated version of the series, our heroine begins to fret that being famous is beginning to make her lose sight of what really matters. She takes a trip out of town to rediscover herself and comes back a bigger, better, bolder person – if that is possible. Slick and quick, the story ticks most of the boxes of pre-teen celebrity fantasies and wallops through the hoops neatly and quickly.
• Funuke: Show Some Love, You Losers! (15)
AN interesting family drama from Japanese director Daihachi Yoshida, Funuke is an adaptation of a smash hit Japanese novel of the same name.
We meet three siblings, Kiyomi, Sumika and Shinji, who have to face life following the death of their parents in a car smash.
The three compete on many levels and it’s the pain and friendship that twists out of this intense relationships that make the basis for the drama and laughs. A funny black comedy that will surprise you each time you think you have a handle on what is going on.
• Is Anybody There? (12a)
DIRECTOR John Crowley’s study of a 10-year-old boy living in his parents’ old people’s home has much charm about it.
Little Edward (Bill Milner) befriends his parents’ charges in this run-down seaside town and begins to nurture an obsession with what happens to them when they pass away.
When ageing magician and rebel Clarence (Michael Caine) appears to see out his remaining days, Edward finds a new friend who will help him come to terms with mortality. Clarence, too, finds solace in relaying his story to such an eager listener: charming, occasionally whimsical, this is an original offering that meanders towards a satisfactory end.
