Chinese instruments drowned out
REVIEW: DRAGON SONGS St Luke's, Old Street
CLASSICAL virtuoso Lang Lang joined forces with the London-based Chinese Silk String Quartet to perform a fascinating, but ultimately disappointing concert at St Luke’s, Old Street, as part of the UBS/LSO Soundscapes series.
The performance ranged from traditional Chinese music to a lively new composition by Chinese composer Raymond Yiu.
The quartet’s instruments were the Chinese lute, zither, dulcimer and two-string violin.
On their own, the quartet demonstrated the delicate, contemplative qualities of Chinese music.
But the interjection of Lang Lang’s piano playing, excellent though it was, turned out to be an unwelcome guest at the feast of delicacies.
Indeed, up against four instruments being hammered, strummed or plucked, the wonderfully melodic song-lines of the Chinese violin struggled to be heard.
