Faces to be seen around the borough
 
MICHAEL PALIN
MICHAEL PALIN – Born 1943
Gospel Oak resident and popular broadcaster, Michael Palin was originally a member of the legendary Monty Python comedy team. He has also starred in films directed by fellow Python Terry Gilliam, who lives in Highgate. Palin is widely known for his BBC TV documentaries, which began in 1989 with Around the World in 80 days.
ALAN BENNETT
ALAN BENNETT – Born 1934
The author and playwright Alan Bennett, who lives in Camden Town, can often be seen cycling on the
Regent’s Canal towpath or along the Broadwalk in Regents Park. Bennett’s work includes the play The History Boys and Talking Heads, a series of monologues for television.
EMMA THOMPSON
EMMA THOMPSON – Born 1959
Camden School for Girls and West Hampstead’s most famous thespian, double Oscar-winner Emma is the daughter of Eric Thompson, who wrote and narrated The Magic Roundabout.
Emma studied English at Cambridge and became vice-president of the university’s theatre club whose alumni includes Camden resident Hugh Laurie .
GEORGE MICHAEL
GEORGE MICHAEL – Born 1963
George teamed up with Andrew Ridgeley to form pop duo Wham! which became a teen sensation. He had a massive solo hit with ‘Careless Whisper’ and then went on to pursue a highly successful solo career, winning two Grammys and three BRIT awards. Lives in Highgate.
RIDLEY SCOTT
RIDLEY SCOTT – Born 1937
Hampstead Grove resident, Ridley Scott has directed movie blockbusters like Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator and Thelma and Louise, and received a knighthood in 2003 for services to the film industry. Has won Golden Globe, Emmy and Bafta awards.
STEVE JONES
STEVE JONES – Born 1944
Professor of genetics and head of University College London’s biology department. He has won the Royal Society Michael Faraday prize for furthering the public understanding of science though his popular science books, including Almost Like A Whale, which is a modern introduction to Darwin’s The Origin of Species.
