REVIEW:BAT FOR LASHES Hard Rock Café
A ROW of religious icons, beads and candles signalled Bat for Lashes’ return. BfL, aka Natasha Khan, showcased her new album Two Suns at the Hard Rock Café.
Dressed in a denim jumpsuit with futuristic glittery turquoise eyeshadow slashed across her face, she carried the set confidently.
Like the mystical Mexican paraphernalia she brought to decorate the stage, her new songs hint at a rich magical realist novel.
Each tells a tale that you can almost see, while the future-folk music and her pure vocals add to the vivid sense of imagery.
The vision of Khan pacing along the stage, maracas in hand, hitting beautiful notes, while tribal drums sound the beat behind, leave the impression you’re witnessing some kind of ceremonial dance.
The combination of atmospheric electro and echoes and tinges of Fleetwood Mac-style choruses balance dangerously on the precipice of becoming Enya-like dirge, but Khan manages to avoid this, erring more on the side of a blend of Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and Vangelis circa Blade Runner.
To a cynic, when it comes to “atmosphere”, BfL pulled together ingredients that a less-talented musician could easily have turned into new-age lift music.
